Someone in band made a rape joke today. I mean, to the entire band. Some people laughed, and I didn’t realize what was happening right away, because I have never heard a rape joke, only about them. And always when I’ve heard about rape jokes, I really couldn’t fathom what they’d be, because in my mind it’s just not funny. I’m the daughter of a ventriloquist, I’ve met many good comedians and also many awful ones. I can usually tell when someone’s trying to be funny, even when they’re the farthest thing from humorous. But when this kid made a rape joke, it took me a minute to realize that in his mind this was supposed to be comedy.
By the way, 90% of the people who laughed were male. Mainly trumpets and percussionists. I just kind of stood by the timpani dumbstruck.

That’s not good. I try to curb my roommate’s tendencies where I can, but they’re more set in their ways.
